On April 18, 2013, the South African Government announced it had chosen Forbes Burnham, a late President of Guyana, to posthumously be the recipient of the prestigious Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo (Oliver Tambo Award). On April 27, 2013, the South African Government announced that it had deferred the award indefinitely.

We, the Board of Directors of the Walter Rodney Foundation, support the action taken by the South African government to indefinitely defer the award and, further, join the call for cancellation of the Award to Forbes Burnham.
