Dr. Patricia Rodney Strengthens Pan-African Partnerships in South Africa and Ethiopia

Dr. Patricia Rodney, Chair of the Walter Rodney Foundation (WRF), recently completed a high-profile diplomatic and cultural tour to South Africa and Ethiopia, strengthening long-standing Pan-African alliances and continuing her family’s legacy of global education. Throughout her travels, Dr. Rodney distributed the foundational literary works of her late husband, the legendary historian and activist Dr. Walter Rodney, reinforcing the foundation's commitment to youth empowerment and historical literacy across the African continent.

Empowering the Next Generation in South Africa

The first leg of her journey brought Dr. Rodney to South Africa, where she visited the historic Union Buildings in Pretoria, the official seat of the South African government. Another central highlight of her time in the country was a strategy meeting with the Executive Council Members of the Young African Leaders Forum (YALF), Anele Mngese and Conrad van Staden. As a prominent Pan-African youth organization dedicated to equipping young people with leadership and development skills, YALF has served as a trusted, long-term partner of both the Rodney family and the WRF. The meeting focused on deepening collaboration and finding fresh ways to support youth-led civic initiatives.

Dr Rodney also met and presented copies of Walter Rodney books to Vusi Mahlanga of the Walter Rodney Library.

Institutional Alliances and Heritage in Ethiopia

The African Union: Dr. Rodney visited the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, where she was hosted by the African Governance Architecture (AU-AGA). The discussions highlighted our shared goals of Pan-Africanism, democratic governance, and human rights.

The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela: Shifting from diplomacy to history, Dr. Rodney journeyed to the Amhara region to tour the ancient Lalibela churches. Cut directly into volcanic rock during the 12th and 13th centuries, these UNESCO World Heritage sites offered a powerful backdrop to the foundation's focus on African history and resilience.

Dr. Rodney’s tour marks a new chapter in keeping the intellectual legacy of Walter Rodney alive for a new generation of African leaders.
